Why Your Existing Firewall May Be Inadequate
Most consumer-grade
products
come with static threat protection, meaning you are protected
only from the point of your last manual security update.
But new threats emerge daily and you need to make sure your protection
is up-to-date. SonicWALL security platforms are never out of date
because they automatically update themselves as new threats appear. This
gives you immediate protection normally afforded by only larger and more
expensive solutions on the market.
Understanding How Information is Scanned Before It Enters Your
Network
There are two ways security appliances scan information today – Stateful
Packet and Deep Packet Inspection. The easiest way to understand the
differences between stateful and deep packet inspection is to think
about airport security. Years ago travelers could walk up to an airport
security checkpoint with a ticket and photo ID in hand and pass a
security inspection. Now, not only will a security agent check your
ticket and ID, but they will also X-ray or scan the contents of your
luggage, ensuring there are no hidden threats.
It is the same with stateful and deep packet inspection. Stateful packet
products will only check the header of information packets coming into
your network. If the header is “ok,” the packet will be sent through,
potentially carrying a virus or threat in the body of the message. Deep
packet inspection verifies the header and also scans the body of the
packet, matching the information to a continuously updated security
database to insure you are protected from the latest threats. Today,
most consumer-grade products only have stateful packet inspection
and can not protect your data from the majority of today’s hidden
threats.
